SPAR South Africa continues to show strong leadership in youth development through its ongoing participation in the YES for Youth Programme. Since 2019, SPAR has played an active role in creating work opportunities for young South Africans, helping thousands gain their first exposure to the workplace. Applications are now open for SPAR’s 6th Annual YES for Youth Programme, starting in 2026. This opportunity is aimed at unemployed youth who are ready to take their first step into the world of work.
About the YES4Youth Programme
The YES4Youth Programme is a national initiative designed to tackle youth unemployment by creating quality work experience opportunities. Through this programme, young people gain practical workplace exposure, develop essential skills, and improve their chances of securing long-term employment.
SPAR partners with Catalyx to implement this programme across its retail and business operations, including SPAR and Build It stores. The programme focuses on giving participants meaningful experience rather than short-term or informal work.
Programme Start Date and Duration
- Contract start date: 01 April 2026
- Programme type: Fixed-term YES work experience contract
Participants are expected to commit fully to the programme and make the most of the learning and development opportunities provided.
Who Can Apply?
This opportunity is open to young South Africans who meet the following criteria:
Minimum requirements:
- South African citizen
- Aged 18 to 28 years
- Currently unemployed
- Not studying full time
- Matric (Grade 12)
- No previous work experience required
- Clear criminal record (criminal checks will be conducted by Catalyx)
Advantageous but not required:
- Completed university degree
- FET or technical trade qualifications
While post-school qualifications can be beneficial, they are not mandatory. The programme is designed to give opportunities to youth who may not yet have had access to work experience.
What to Expect During the Selection Process
The application and selection process is structured to identify motivated and committed candidates.
Shortlisted applicants will be required to:
- Attend JumpStart training, which focuses on workplace readiness
- Complete one week of work experience
- Participate in a formal interview
These steps help ensure that candidates are prepared for the workplace and understand what is expected of them during the programme.

- Certified copy of Matric certificate
